Anna Seghers was born 1900 in Mainz. In 1928, she published her first novel, Aufstand der Fischer von St. Barbara (The Santa Barbara Fishermen’s Revolt), received the literary award Kleist-Preis and joined the German Communist Party. In 1933 she fled from the Nazis to Paris, before moving on to Southern France, later to Mexico. She returned to Berlin in 1947, where she was
awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis. She became a member of the World Peace Council and was Chairman of the Society of Writers of the GDR from 1952 to 1978. She died in 1983. |
